Colonel's Considerations, Day 1 - Georgia on my mind...

G'day!

As I type we're currently in our 6th hour on Jekyll Island, and I have to say, it looks like a heck of a place. We're right in the south-east corner of Georgia, right on the Atlantic Coast (it can't me more than 100 or so paces from our front door to the ocean, I'll measure it tomorrow and get back to you on it...). It feels great to be reacquainted with the ocean again after nine months spent between Minnesota and Colorado, neither of which are even remotely close to the sea - I dunno how many other team members have spent so long away from the ocean, but after spending ANY time at all in Minnesota, especially during the winter, seeing the ocean is a welcome relief.

We left Mac at 4:03 am this morning (would have been 4:00 if the van hadn't had to swing by Kirk to pick me up), and flew out of MSP a couple hours later. The plan was to go through Memphis to Jacksonville and then drive up to Jekyll Island from there, and that's indeed what ended up happening, but we ended up staying in Memphis about 3 hours longer than we were hoping (that's ok, they had an Elvis store at the airport... though no-one went there... actually, most of us spent the time sleeping at our gate).

Everything else went smoothly; we ended up checking into our accomodation ("villas" by the sea) at around 6 pm, then the men's team and Angie headed to the course for some practice while the entire women's team (all two of them) went with Martha to get groceries.

GOLF ON GRASS!!! After a month or so practicing in the new fieldhouse and at the Goodrich Golf Dome in White Bear Lake, it felt pretty foreign. Don't get me wrong, there's something romantic about playing a round at Jekyll Island in the fieldhouse, imagining where your shots are going and doing laps of the track to simulate walking up to your ball (yes, we did in fact do this), but I can't wait to play the actual course tomorrow. According to one of the team members to be left unnamed, it'll be like "whoosh!"

Well, everyone else has been asleep while I've been typing, I think I'll join them. Can't remember the last time I was asleep before midnight though, I guess that means I'm truly on vacation!

Look out tomorrow for a description of the course, the wonders of the beach (including number of paces to get to it) and a description of Bochy Ball Golf... it'll be quite a hit someday...

Peace,

Colonel
